Lesson 3 - Create

The Grown-Up Scoop

Crafts are a great way to explore a book in a hands-on and creative way. For Last Stop on Market Street, we invite you to create your own bus and the city surrounding it. While your child(ren) craft, it’s a perfect time to spark a conversation with them. Find example conversation starters below!

Bus and Cityscape

Materials:

  • 1 piece of white cardstock

  • 2 sheets of foamie paper (one in black, one in another color)

  • Crayons or Markers

  • Scissors

Instructions:

Step 1

GATHER all the materials.

Step 2

CUT OUT two circles from black foamie sheet and three squares from other foamie sheet. DRAW outline of a bus on card stock.

Step 3

ATTACH foam shapes to card stock to create wheels and windows of the bus.

Step 4

USE markers or crayons to add people to your bus and create a city backdrop. CUT OUT extra foamie shapes to add too!

5 Power Points!

Conversation Starters for Your Craft and Chat!

1. “Name some community helpers.” (firefighters, teachers, construction workers, etc.) Talk to your child about what these helpers do and how they help us.

2. Explain the difference between things we need and things we want. “Can you think of something you need?” “Want?” “How can you work for what you want?”

3. “Have you ever been on a bus?” “Where would you like to go on a bus ride?” “What can you do to stay safe on the bus?”

4. What is your child’s favorite thing to do in your community? Work together to make a list of fun things to try in your city.

5. “How can you contribute to your community now?” “What would you like to learn so that you could help your neighborhood/ community in the future?”
