The Grown-Up Scoop

Crafts are a great way to explore a book in a hands-on and creative way. For Viva Frida, we invite you to paint a self-portrait. While your child(ren) craft, it’s a perfect time to spark a conversation with them. Find example conversation starters below!

Self-Portrait

Materials:

  • 1 Sheet of watercolor paper

  • Watercolor paint and brush pack

  • 1 Sheet of self-stick foamy

  • Scissors

  • Cup of Water

  • Mirror (optional)

Instructions:

Step 1

GATHER all items to complete your self portrait.

Step 2

FILL half the cup with water. DIP paintbrush into the cup and wet paint. PAINT your own watercolor portrait on your paper. Let it dry.

Step 3

CUT shapes and/or strips out of self-stick foamy sheet.

Step 4

PEEL off the back and DECORATE around and/or on your portrait. VIVA! You are your own artist!

Conversation Starters for Your Craft and Chat!

  • “Do you have a pet? What do you love best about your pet? If you don’t have one, what kind would you have if you could?”

  • “Do you like to paint? What tools do you use to paint? (fingers, brushes, stampers, sponges) Do you paint your face and your body? Do you use a mirror?”

  • “Do you recognize any of the words in Spanish in the story? Do you know another language?”

  • “Do you have a special box? Did you make it or decorate it? Does it have a key? What do you keep in it?”

  • How would YOU finish the sentences that Frida stated in the book?

    • “I am…” “I search…” “I play…” “I dream…” “I know…” “I love…” “I live…” “I see…” “I feel…”
