The Grown-Up Scoop

Crafts are a great way to explore a book in a hands-on and creative way. For, Kaya’s Heart Song, children are invited to make parasols. While your child(ren) craft, it’s a perfect time to spark a conversation with them. Find example conversation starters below!

Let’s Make Our Own Parasol for Mindfulness and Performance!

Materials:

  • 4 sheets of pattern paper

  • 2 straws

  • Gluestick

  • Scissors

  • Tape (optional)

Instructions:

Step 1

CUT both straws in half, and CUT one large circle from each piece of paper.

Step 2

FOLD circle in half. FOLD again in quarters, and again in eighths.

Step 3

CUT convex shape from end. OPEN and CUT one fold slightly beyond the center of circle.

Step 4

APPLY glue to one triangle beside the cut of the fold, then tuck under triangle. Insert straw through small opening in the center of the circle which has now become a parasol! Repeat until you have all four!

  1. “Do you know what you call a shape with eight sides? What about a shape with seven sides?”

  2. “Have you ever heard of the word, parasol?”

  3. “What other word can you think of for this object?”

  4. “What do you do to be still?” (You and your child can focus on being quiet to still your body parts, listen to your heart, which calms your mind.)

  5. “What is your heart song? What does it sound like?” (Talk about what you enjoy doing and when you see your child enjoying something.)
