The Grown-Up Scoop
Crafts are a great way to explore a book in a hands-on and creative way. For, Kaya’s Heart Song, children are invited to make parasols. While your child(ren) craft, it’s a perfect time to spark a conversation with them. Find example conversation starters below!
Let’s Make Our Own Parasol for Mindfulness and Performance!
Materials:
- 4 sheets of pattern paper 
- 2 straws 
- Gluestick 
- Scissors 
- Tape (optional) 
Instructions:
Step 1
CUT both straws in half, and CUT one large circle from each piece of paper.
Step 2
FOLD circle in half. FOLD again in quarters, and again in eighths.
Step 3
CUT convex shape from end. OPEN and CUT one fold slightly beyond the center of circle.
Step 4
APPLY glue to one triangle beside the cut of the fold, then tuck under triangle. Insert straw through small opening in the center of the circle which has now become a parasol! Repeat until you have all four!

- “Do you know what you call a shape with eight sides? What about a shape with seven sides?” 
- “Have you ever heard of the word, parasol?” 
- “What other word can you think of for this object?” 
- “What do you do to be still?” (You and your child can focus on being quiet to still your body parts, listen to your heart, which calms your mind.) 
- “What is your heart song?
