These first lessons are all about discovering this amazing book. Use this time to not only read it, but to start diving into the themes and details of the story!

Before You Read
To get started, share this short story summary with your child(ren):
Whatever your mood, wherever you might be, the ukulele’s magic chords set your mind free. This story travels around the globe, visiting cultures and landmarks worldwide, exploring the ukulele through rhythm and rhyme. Discover historic facts and new songs, as young readers find that magic comes when learning to play… the ukulele!
Now, sitting comfortably with your child(ren), show them the front and back covers of the book. Then ask questions, like the following, to stimulate their thinking, to encourage them to read, and to create wonder.
Are You Ready?
Begin each lesson with an African A-GO and A-MAY exercise to bring child(ren) to attention.
A-GO: Means “Are you ready to listen in silence?” (Explain the meaning and have them repeat the word.)
A-MAY: Means “Yes, I am ready to listen in silence and you may begin.” (Explain the meaning and have them repeat the word.)
Before Reading Questions:
Does the instrument on the cover look familiar? Do you know its name?
What are some ways you like to make music?
Can you name some materials used to make instruments?
How might you make different sounds from the same instrument?
What are some ways people travel? How do you go place to place?
Do you know anyone that lives in another part of the world?
What’s the most magical thing that has happened to you?
Read the Book
When you are ready, read the book with your child(ren). Remember to have fun with it!
After You Read
After reading, review the story and its details by asking more questions to your child/children.

What differences in clothing did you see in France, Spain, Texas and Vienna?
Do you know of any special dances that people do?
Can you name some parts of the ukulele?
When is the right time to play the ukulele?
