Lesson 3 - Create

The Grown-Up Scoop

Crafts are a great way to explore a book in a hands-on and creative way. For Max Found Two Sticks, we invite your child(ren) to create a tambourine. While your child(ren) craft, it’s a perfect time to spark a conversation with them. Find example conversation starters below!

Tambourine

Materials:

  • 2 paper plates

  • pipe cleaner pieces

  • jingle bells

  • tissue paper

  • glue stick

  • crayons/markers

Instructions:

Step 1

Thread one pipe cleaner piece through the loop on each gold bell.

Step 2

Push each pipe cleaner into one of the holes on your paper plate. Twist to tighten and tuck the ends under the plate so they don’t stick out.

Step 3

Glue tissue paper to paper plate and cover the top with any design you want!

Step 4

Color with crayons or markers to further decorate your tambourine! Add your name or a pattern around the edge. Shake and enjoy!

5 Power Points!

Conversation Starters for Your Craft and Chat!

  1. Ask your child if they like to talk. Why or why not? Who do they like to talk to?

  2. Explain that if they don’t feel like talking, there are other ways to communicate. Ask your child if they can think of other ways that people communicate with each other. (Examples: writing a letter, singing a song, a hug or high five, a drawing)

  3. With your child, look for items around your house that you can make music with. Can you make up a song like Max did?

  4. Ask your child what their favorite song is. Why is it their favorite? Then share your favorite song.

  5. See if you can use your body to make music! (Clapping, stomping, etc.)
