Cross- Curricular Unplugging Activities

English Language Arts

  • Write a poem or story about a family adventure in your neighborhood.

  • Write a tech-free song/poem/rap to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”

  • Assign each student one word from each column of the vocabulary words. Write a sentence using those four words.

  • Devise fun names for “device-free” zones around the house. Use markers to create a placard (sign) for those areas, just like in a museum!

Math

  • Shape Scavenger Hunt: Search for circles, squares, and rectangles in the house or park.

  • Listen to Jazz music. Count the beats in a song.

  • Count the number of different objects at a park near you!

Science

  • Investigate how different instruments produce sound.

  • Make musical instruments with recycled materials.

  • Bake one of your favorite foods with a member of your family. How do the ingredients come together to make this wonderful food? This will also be a fun Math activity!

  • Make your own small scale park with cardboard and paper from around the house.

Social Studies

  • Make a map of a 3 stop adventure in your town that you would like to explore. Be sure to include where do we start and the path we take to get to all these fun places!

  • Create a collage of your state using torn paper from old magazines or newsletters.

  • What are some of your favorite cultural centers near you? Draw a picture of this place or what you love most about it!

Foreign Language

  • Jazz music is influenced from the sounds of Africa. Discuss with your students what languages are spoken on the continent of Africa? How many?

  • Explore another language through art or food. What languages do they speak in New Orleans, Louisiana? Do you know why?
