Cross- Curricular Activities
Art and Creative Expression
Have child(ren) draw or paint landscape scenes for different seasons.
Discuss what kinds of things would be in a landscape scene for each season.
List colors used to express cold weather, warm weather, day and night, or the mood of the story.
English Language Arts
Have child(ren) write a “How To” paper on owling. Include how to dress and how to behave when owling.
Write a list of words that rhyme with moon and book, or with owl and bow.
Have child(ren) first create a landscape picture (see Art and Creative Expression section above), then have them write about their landscape pictures. Explain the color choices and what should be in a landscape picture.
Math
Make a bar graph. Find out which child(ren) want to go owling and which would rather watch a squirrel.
Measure the length of wingspan of various birds, such as a Great Horned Owl, a hummingbird, a robin, and an eagle. Who has the longest wingspan? Who has the shortest?
Social Studies
Use a map to locate the part of the country where the girl and her father live.
Find significant and historical places in these states. Share with the group or with parent/teacher.
Research facts about the state including animals and weather unique to that part of the country.
How do these states compare to your own?
Science
Study nocturnal animals and compare them to animals that are not nocturnal (diurnal animals).
Make a chart and draw pictures to show how we use each of our senses.
Take child(ren) outside to animal watch. Decide on rules needed before going outside. What animals can be seen in your neighborhood?
