Cross- Curricular Activities

Math and Model Magic!

  • Addition and subtraction:

  • Model different sized groups of balls to represent numbers in an equation, then physically combine or separate them to solve the problem.

  • Have students create a "number line" using a long strip of Model Magic, marking different values with small indentations and moving "counters" (small balls) along the line to visualize addition and subtraction.

  • Fractions:

    • Mold a rectangular block of Model Magic to represent a whole, then divide it into equal parts to demonstrate fractions.

    • Students can physically break off pieces to represent different fractional parts and compare them visually.

  • Geometry:

    • Shape different geometric figures like squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles with Model Magic to explore their properties and characteristics.

    • Have students create 3D models of geometric shapes to understand spatial relationships.

English Language Arts

  • Assign each child a color. Ask them to write descriptions of how their color feels, sounds, tastes, or smells. Then, as a group or in pairs, have children take turns reading their descriptions out loud while their partner or the group guesses the color.

Science

  • Anatomy and Biology:

  • Build models of cells (animal and plant) with different organelles.

  • Create detailed models of organs like the heart, brain, or digestive system.

  • Mold different types of bacteria or viruses to study their shapes.

  • Geology:

    • Make models of rock formations like stalactites, stalagmites, or sedimentary layers.

    • Create impressions of fossils to learn about extinct organisms.

    • Represent different types of rocks based on their textures and colors.

  • Astronomy:

    • Construct a model of the solar system with planets and their relative sizes.

    • Create a 3D representation of the moon's phases.

    • Mold constellations based on their star patterns.

  • Chemistry:

    • Represent molecules by building their atomic structures with different colored Model Magic.

    • Visualize chemical bonds and reactions through 3D models.

    • Demonstrate different states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) with different shapes.

Social Emotional

*A Visualization Exercise (closing eyes & creating a mental image)

Ask students to think of a place they enjoy visiting:

  • Where are you? How do you know about this place? Did you make it up or use information you learned/experienced at another time?

  • Are you alone or with others? Others close or distant? Do you know them? Related or strangers?

  • What are you doing in the image? Imagine the physical space using your five senses: See, hear, smell, taste, and feel?

  •  Why are you enjoying the experience? Does it remind you of something you heard/read in a book?

Social Studies

  • Present each child with a raised outline (8.5 x 14) laminated copy of a United States map by Clovernook. Adapt one that primarily outlines each individual state clearly or a particular region. Distribute model magic to different states creating different textures as you go and/or colors.

    • First, locate YOUR state. Now, identify the Northern portion of the map. Find Southern? Eastern? Western?  Point out the Southwest (New Mexico, Nevada and Utah). Where do YOU live in your state?
