Lesson 3 - Investigate the Vocabulary
The Grown-Up Scoop
Vocabulary is a great way to start engaging with your child(ren) and the book. It is also a springboard for comprehension, stimulating memory, and encouraging a child to read.
Vocabulary Tools
Below you will find, downloadable versions of the multilingual vocabulary and vocabulary strips for The Sound That Jazz Makes. These are great resources to print out and cut into cards to use as helpful tools when teaching your child(ren) key words from the book. If you are unable to print, you can also use blank scrap paper or construction paper to copy down the words and cut them out to create your own cards.
How to Use
Add dimension to the printed text by applying the five senses and providing manipulative objects (e.g., blocks, tiles, boards, everyday materials, etc.,) to create activities and games. Strengthen thinking and reasoning skills with these activities:
✓ Matching (visually with letter/words or auditorily with sounds)
✓ Discriminating (visually letters that are similar in print/writing, e.g., b/d, m/n, etc.)
✓ Association (opposites, synonyms, rhyming, go-togethers, e.g., shoe & sock, etc.)
✓ Figure Ground (identifying the letter/word within an array of actual objects or a busy picture)
✓ Visual Closure (partially cover the book or page and ask to name the object
