The Grown-Up Scoop
Crafts are a great way to explore a book in a hands-on and creative way. For This Jazz Man, we invite your child(ren) to create a portrait of a jazz singer. While your child(ren) craft, it’s a perfect time to spark a conversation with them. Find example conversation starters below!
Portrait of a Jazz Singer
Materials:
- 1 Portrait paper (Download below!) 
- Assorted color and pattern paper 
- Brown tissue paper 
- Crayons 
- Glue 
Instructions:
Step 1
RIP UP pieces of your brown tissue paper and GLUE them on the face of your figure.
Step 2
RIP UP your colorful pieces of paper and COLLAGE them onto the clothing of the figure and the background.
Step 3
USE crayons, colored pencils, or markers to FILL IN any remaining space!
Step 4

Conversation Starters for Your Craft and Chat!
- Ask your child what his/her favorite song is- do they know what type of music it is? 
- Tell your child what your favorite song is, and what type of music it is. 
- Talk to your child about a time you saw a live music performance. 
- Ask your child what instrument they would like to know how to play.
