Cross- Curricular Activities
English Language Arts
Have children identify words relating to “time” in the story. (Forever, again, back then, after, finally, awhile)
Write a story using the phrases: into the wind, against the wind, and beyond the wind.
Rhyme words with the verbs (action words) in the tory. (Holds, grip, flapping, fly, cried)
Have children create a story about something they hope to do while growing up.
Re-read the story and have the children make the sound of the wind whenever “wind” is read.
Print labels to match the pictures of airplane parts or pilot gear.
Math
Have children measure height of one another against a wall chart. Record with name and age.
Measure how far child’s plane (from art activity) will fly.
Find the number words used in the story (five, seven, eleven). Draw clouds matching the word.
Use the year 1941, formation of the Tuskegee wind flyers, to create a fill in the blanks or (1941-1943) or addition/subtraction problems.
Fine Arts
Give each child a 2 ft. long crepe paper steamer. Outside on a windy day, have child(ren) explore how the wind blows their streamers when walking against and with the wind.
Science
On a windy day, give child(ren)a group of items (tissue, cotton ball, crayon, a piece of notebook paper, paper clip). Have the child(ren) predict and test which items will blow away.
Lay a plastic bag on a table. Place a book on the bag. Arrange the bag so the open end extends of the table. The book should not extend off the table. Lift the bag a little and blow very hard into the open end. What happens? (The extra air molecules you blew into the bag pushes against each other, causing the bag to expand and lift the book).
